I am so excited about my latest deployment project!
MY STAIRCASE REDO!!!!
Below is a photo of my staircase with carpet on it. My staircase is actually in the kitchen, and leads up to our bonus room. My kids are not allowed to leave the kitchen with food, so they sit on the steps to eat their snacks....(much to my dismay) So, the carpet was just filthy, and I couldn't stand looking at it
one.second.longer.
So, I had the carpet taken up and replaced with hardwood steps!!!!
The same people who did my board and battan HERE also did my steps for me.
So, this was not a DIY project as far as putting the steps in, but it was a DIY stain and paint job!!! I did all the staining and painting!!!
First I sanded and stained the steps BEFORE they were put in. I think this saved me alot of headaches, instead of trying to stain them after they were installed...
I used Min Wax with polyurethane already in it.
After the first coat dried, I used a piece of steel wool to "sand" the wood before I put another coat on...this is what the directions said to do.
The more coats of stain, the darker it appears. I wanted it as dark as I could get it, so I put on 3 or 4 coats....I lost count! ha!
And here are my new steps!!!!
Can you say "GORGEOUS?!?!?"
After everything was stained, dried and installed, I went back and painted all the white trim, including the risers in between the steps.
I'm soooo in L.O.V.E with my new iron spindles and new post....
Okay, so let's take another look at BEFORE..
And here is the AFTER...
It makes SUCH a difference!!! So much cleaner and crisp looking!
I love them!
What do you think???

Wow - a really beautiful transformation! I have to show this post to my husband - we are just about to repaint and stain our stairs. We ripped the carpet off on a whim and suddenly it's become an urgent project! Thanks for sharing your inspiring photos!

I saw this on Just A Girl. LOVE it! It looks awesome!
Just a Girl posted this and she was right, this is amazing. I love the new look.
Just beautiful! I always prefer wood flooring to carpet and in this case the difference is just amazing!
This is awesome !! I'm saving your pics because I have a balcony kitchen & I could use this as inspiration for my steps ! Great post !
I have been wanting to do this to my stairs forever. The carpet has to go. Do you know what kind of wood to buy? Do you just glue it to whatever is existing on the stairs?

& we have the EXACT same iron spindles on our front staircase!!
Great minds, my friend...great minds! ;)
so jealous! I cant convince my husband to do this yet. He is worried about the kids falling on wood floors.. ugh, darn kids. JK. :-) Your stairs look beautiful! How difficult was it to put in the spindles?
I love wood stairs and yours look amazing!
Did you do anything to darken the banister? I need to know before I replace all my spindles, so please, do tell?
I am in the middle of re-doing my foyer stairs. Removing the carpet was the hardest part, plus so many staples to remove. Your steps came out beautifully, especially since you had hardwood put in. Just beautiful. Your photos are so clear and vivid. What camera do you use?
My best- Diane
GIRLLLL!! I LOVE all of the things you have done lately!!! They all look FAB!!!! Great job!!!
That is EXACTLY what I want to do with my stairs! I've heard dark stained wood shows fuzz and dust more, what would you say? (I want a dark finish to match my cabinetry- surely sweeping some stairs is way easier than cleaning the carpet, right?!)
i LOVE these. i LOATHE carpet on stairs. we just put an offer on a house and i want to do this. did you replace the risers too? i priced the steps at lowe's this weekend. did you use oak or pine? the pine was WAY cheaper. i would be staining them like you did.
